Former 'Zoey 101' star rescues baby from car crash
Matthew Underwood, best known for his role as Logan Reese on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101, saved the life of a 4-month-old boy Thursday night in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
According to a police report from March 30, Underwood watched a 2003 white Saturn run a stop sign. The car proceeded to swerve across six lanes of traffic before crashing into a tree. After witnessing the accident, Underwood rushed over to the vehicle where he came across an unconscious male and female with syringes in their arms. The infant was unharmed in the back seat.
“I heard a baby cry and that’s when I really stopped caring about anything that was going on there. I immediately ran around the other side of the car and looked for the baby,” Underwood told WPTV.com.
The former actor removed the needles from the man and woman and sat them upright by tightening the seatbelts. However, Underwood credits the officer who arrived at the scene “the real hero” as he performed CPR on both adults at the same time.
Police charged the couple with child neglect and other drug crimes subsequently discovering paraphernalia and pills in the vehicle. The child has since been turned over to a family member.
“I hope they can get rehabilitated,” Underwood said regarding the infant’s parents. “I hope they can wake up and want their child back so much, want their life together, that they’ll get clean.”
