Deaconess Barbara A. Carrington Ashwood was a loving and devoted wife, mother and sister who enjoyed numerous events with her family at church, their family cookouts and other poolside events. Deaconess Barbara transitioned to heaven peacefully, during her sleep, on June 16, 2023.  Barbara A. Carrington was born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 25, 1944 to Malcolm and Annie Carrington.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry D. Ashwood, Sr., her parents, Deacon Malcolm and Deaconess Annie C. Carrington, her daughter, Anita B. Sutton (David) and her older brother, Malcolm Carrington, Jr.   

Deaconess Barbara was reared in the Huntersville section of Norfolk with her two brothers and three sisters.  Barbara enjoyed dancing as a teenager and graduated from Booker T. Washington High  School in 1961.  Barbara was a sparkling majorette in her High School Marching Band.  Throughout her life, Barbara would often stop and demonstrate her amazing baton twirling styles to relatives and friends alike.  Immediately after High school, Barbara enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps for a short service as a  communications specialist.  Soon after, she returned to her civilian career. 

Deaconess Barbara was baptized in 1954, at Bethel Baptist Church by her grandfather, the Honorable Rev. Charles Faulcon.  She was a fun-loving C.O.G. (Child of GOD).  Barbara was literally a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church from her Sunrise to Sunset.  She later followed in her mother’s  footsteps and became a faithful Deaconess and Church Secretary for over 20yrs.  During her dutiful years, she was also an active member of the Woman’s Board, the Usher Board, the Young Woman’s  Auxiliary Boards, the Woman’s Day Committee (Orange Team), the Booker T. Washington Alumni of Norfolk, Class of ’61 and the Mill Creek Homeowners Association of Chesapeake, Virginia.  Throughout Barbara’s civilian career she worked several positions in the communications industry.  One of the highlights of her 40yrs in the field of communications was as a Communications Liaison working for The Central Atlantic Command (CINCLANTFLT) at Naval Station Norfolk. 

Deaconess Barbara A. Ashwood was an active Red Hatter and is survived by her loving children, Andre B. Small, Major Bill C. Saunders, and Larry D. Ashwood, Jr.  She leaves, to the Glory of God, her five grandchildren, Rodriguez Hines, Alicia and Brittney Sutton, LeeAnna and Weston Saunders, and numerous relatives and friends who will keep her love of GOD, family, work and dancing legacy alive.
