A-League: Roars Jordan Holmes hoping for new deal

Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jordan Holmes’ future is in limbo after the three-time A-League champions withdrew a new contract offer following the sacking of coach Warren Moon.

Holmes, who is off contract at the end of the season, was set to accept a new and upgraded deal that had been presented to him after impressing between the posts since joining the Roar in 2021 from English club Ebbsfleet United.

However, Moon’s departure in February led to a change of heart from Brisbane officials.

The former Australian under-23 representative gloveman – who made a string of saves in Brisbane’s 2-2 draw with Wellington Phoenix last Sunday in a continuation of his solid form – has been told no new deals will be offered to players coming off contract until a coach is appointed next season.

Interim coach Nick Green won’t be back for the new campaign.

As revealed by News Corp Australia last week, the Roar have targeted the services of former Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory coach Marco Kurz.

If Kurz does not accept the offer, Ross Aloisi or Hayden Foxe are the other top contenders for the role.

Regardless of who is in charge of Brisbane next season, 25-year-old Holmes wants his future known as soon as possible.

Despite the Roar delaying on offering Holmes a new deal, it’s understood the Sydney-born custodian still wants to stay with the club.

However, Brisbane run the risk of losing him if they take too long to again table an offer.

Second-choice Roar keeper Macklin Freke is contracted to the club for another season, however if Holmes does depart, Freke would likely again play second fiddle to any other gloveman that is brought to Brisbane.

Socceroos goalkeeper coach John Crawley was glad Holmes had found “regular football” with the Roar.

“I’d probably like to see a little bit more of Jordan Holmes,” Crawley said.

“It’s great that he’s found some regular football up in Queensland and that he’s been given an opportunity.

“He needs to continue with that over the next 12 months before we really take a good look at him.”

Holmes’ immediate focus is Monday night’s clash between the Roar and Sydney FC at Suncorp Stadium.

Brisbane must win to keep alive their slim hopes of playing finals football this season.
